Best Android Tablet: Le Pan II Review versus Apple Ipad 2
Le Pan II is one of the cheapest Android tablets but is Le Pan II the best Android Tablet? Before I tell you all the juicy details about the Le Pan II, I must admit that I love all things Apple.
Within our family, we own an iPhone 4s, iPod Touch, an iPod Nano, and 2 iPod shuffles. I just sold my Apple iPod 32GB classic and I am seriously considering making the switch to Mac once my PC desktop computer gives up the ghost.
You can imagine then, how excited I was when the iPad was first released. I had to visit an Apple store to behold the new technology and was spellbound. Who wouldn’t love its crisp, clean lines and fluid screens that offered a multitude of possibilities? There was only one thing that kept me from buying the iPad…the price! I simply couldn’t justify spending anywhere from $500 to $700 for a tablet computer. There had to be another alternative that would compare nicely with the updated iPad 2.
I found my answer for the best android tablet in the Le Pan II TC979. It is an inexpensively cheap Android Tablet that doesn’t sacrifice on quality and is loaded with features. Is it an iPad killer? Well there probably isn’t anything on the market that will completely take out the iPad tablet line, however when you look at the specs of the Le Pan II, you’ll be surprised by some of the ways in which this tablet not only matches Apple iPad 2, but exceeds it. That’s not to say that the Ipad 2 is inferior in every way to the Le Pan 2TC979 , but the areas where the Le Pan II is superior may surprise you.
LE PAN INTRODUCES THE LE PAN TC 970
To begin with, Le Pan entered the tablet marketplace with the Le Pan TC 970 which used the Android 2.2 tablet (Froyo) operating system. It had one of the highest ratings on Amazon for an Android tablet with a 4+ star rating which has now been discontinued to make way for the Le Pan II Android tablet. The Le Pan II raised the bar on the older Le Pan TC 970 Android 2.2 tablet by incorporating a faster processor, more RAM, a newer operating system Android 3.2 Honeycomb, (which is upgradeable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich) better camera and adding 8 GB of internal memory.
To see how the Le Pan II stacks up against the iPod 2, take a look at the specifications below. I’ll discuss some key advantages that the Le Pan 2 has over the iPad 2 below the specs chart.

LE PAN II HAS A MORE POWERFUL DUAL CORE PROCESSOR THAN IPAD 2
The first thing you’ll notice is that the Le Pan II and Ipad 2 have dual core processors, however the Le Pan 2 has as a higher GHz rating than the Ipad 2. What the heck is GHz anyway? GHz stands for Giga Hertz which refers to the clock speed of the central processing chip that runs your tablet device. The higher the GHz, the more instructions per second the chip can process. On paper, the Le Pan II processor can process up to 20% more data per second than the Apple iPod 2 can. Programs that eat a lot of processing power like video editing, music recording, and other processor hungry programs may see a quicker response time with a higher GHz rating. Not too bad for a cheap Android tablet.
LE PAN II HAS TWICE AS MUCH RAM AS IPAD 2
The second difference you’ll see is that the Le Pan II has twice the RAM that the iPad 2 does. RAM stands for Random Access Memory. The higher the RAM you have on your computer device, the less work a computer has to rely on its CPU to read data from the storage memory of your tablet. This can substantially speed up a tablets ability to play video games and other memory hungry programs that demand lots of data to run properly. The above two items represent two of the most important features that help your tablet to run at optimum levels. When you consider that the Le Pan II is nearly half the price of the base model iPad 2, you can begin to appreciate why purchasing this tablet is pretty much a no brainer. Another point given to this cheap Android tablet.
IPAD 2 ADVANTAGES OVER LE PAN II
Are there areas where the iPad has advantages over the Le Pan II? Yes, so let’s take a look at them. In the specs chart above you’ll notice that the 16GB iPad has twice the internal memory of the Le Pan 2. The iPad 2 has a total of 16 GB of internal storage with no way to add additional storage to the device. The Le Pan comes with 8 GB of internal storage (like the Kindle Fire) but unlike the iPad 2 and the Kindle Fire, the Le Pan 2 has the ability to add an additional 32 GB of mini SD storage which will cost you around $36.00.
If you add the 32 GB mini SD card to the Le Pan II you will actually end up with 60% more storage memory than the basic iPad 2 model. That means you can store more movies, games, pictures, apps, and books on the Le Pan II for far less than what you’d pay for any of the iPad 2 models.
Another advantage the iPad 2 has over the Le Pan II is that it has a rear facing camera. Now before you get too excited, keep in mind that the rear camera on the iPad 2 is only a 1 megapixel camera. To put that into perspective, most of the new entry level digital cameras are 5 megapixel cameras. In other words your 5 year old, used digital camera is going to be able to take much better pictures than the iPad 2. And let’s face it, do you really want to hold up a cutting board size tablet to take an inferior picture of your friends? I doubt it.
COMPARING THE FRONT FACING IPAD 2 CAMERA TO LE PAN 2 CAMERA
However, both the Le Pan II and iPad 2 have front facing cameras that can be used for video chatting or taking pictures. The difference is, the iPad 2 only has VGA capability (640 x 480 pixel resolution) while the Le Pan II has a 2 Megapixel front facing camera which is 4 times the quality of the iPad 2’s front facing camera and twice the quality of the iPad’s rear facing camera. Which camera would you rather use?
IPAD 2’S LARGEST ADVANTAGE IS THE BATTERY LIFE
The largest advantage that iPad has over the Le Pan II is its battery. The iPad 2 is rated for 10 hours of continuous use, while the Le Pan II is rated for 7 hours of continuous use. Of course actual times may vary depending on how you use the device but I personally don’t plan on using a tablet for longer than 7 hours at a time anyway, and if I did, I can just plug it in and keep working.
SCREEN RESOLUTION OF LE PAN II AND IPAD 2
The iPad 2 has a slightly higher screen resolution than the Le Pan 2 but only marginally and I seriously doubt you could visibly see the difference with the naked eye. I was stunned how beautiful the older Le Pan TC 970 screen was, let alone how nice the new improved Le Pan II screen is, which is gorgeous! In the older Le Pan model, I was shocked how bright and clear the screen was even while looking at it from severe angles and it is no different with the new Le Pan 2. The spacious 9.7 inch screen of the Le Pan II is a crowd pleaser with its crisp, bright picture and fluid motion.
Finally, the weight of the iPad 2 is 1.32 pounds versus the Le Pan’s 1.5 pounds.
LE PAN II HAS STEREO SPEAKERS, IPAD 2 DOESN’T
Other advantages that the Le Pan II has over the iPad include 2 external speakers versus the iPad’s one. That means if you are listening to music or watching movies through the built in speakers, you’ll hear Stereo sound in the Le Pan II, but only Mono sound on the iPad 2. You can remedy this however by plugging in a pair of earphones which can be done on both tablets.
LE PAN II HAS GPS SOME IPAD 2’S DON’T
Another HUGE advantage the Le Pan II has over the basic 16GB iPad 2 is that it has GPS and Compass features built in, while all Wi-Fi only iPad 2 tablets don’t have any navigation. Honestly, I could not believe that Apple would not put that feature into all of their iPads. You’d have to buy the 3G models of the iPad to get that critical feature which will cost you hundreds more. Meanwhile the Le Pan II which costs about half the price of the base model iPad has it built in.
With GPS, you can map yourself anywhere you need to go, pinpoint directions, locate restaurants, nearby entertainment, and businesses, as well as find your way out of unfamiliar areas with the GPS and Compass features on the Le Pan II. That feature alone gives a huge advantage to Le Pan II over the Wi-Fi only iPad 2 models, plus you don’t have to pay for a cellular line fee to use the GPS like you would on the iPad 3G models.
Both Le Pan II and iPad 2 can connect wirelessly through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth while the Le Pan has the additional ability to connect via Ethernet. It’s great to have as many options for connecting online and to other devices as possible.
LE PAN II IS THE BEST ANDROID TABLET
All in all, when you consider that Le Pan II has a superior processor, twice the RAM, the ability to expand the memory up to a total of 40 GB (8 GB built-in and 32 GB of optional SD mini memory) GPS capability, stereo speakers, higher resolution camera, and costs hundreds less than an iPad 2 model that has the Navigation feature, the Le Pan II is perfect for those of us who want the functionality of a tablet but not have to pay the premium prices so many tablet manufacturers are demanding. Plus the styling of this device is a real eye catcher and people take notice of its classy brushed aluminum and edge to edge glass architecture. Trust me when I say, people will want to know where you got that expensive looking Android tablet!

As I said, I am an Apple product lover, but I simply refuse to lose my head and pay hundreds of dollars more for a device that is inferior in so many critical ways to the Le Pan II. I figure that the money I save on the Le Pan II gives me a tablet I can be excited about, plus gives me access to the endless free apps and games that the Android marketplace is known for, plus as we all know, electronics are always being upgraded which is all the more reason not to overpay for a tablet in today’s marketplace so that you can save money for next seasons model.
With Le Pan II you will be able to upgrade to Androids latest operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) which allows for easier navigation, refined animations, multi-tasking, streaming voice recognition, improved email and internet browsing, highly integrated social media and video controls, Face-unlock security, Android Beam for sharing files with other compatible devices, and much more. The standard charing system in the camera used corded charging. This tied up the camera in one place while the battery was charging. The plug-in charger in very convenient and you could be charging a spare battery while using the camera. Why didn’t Sony think of including a battery charger such as this one to begin with?

I purchased this camera yesterday at a local store and I returned it 2 hours later. I could not get the software to download and I could not get the camera to power up. I tried with the batteries that came with the camera… no go. So I put new batteries in the camera and it still would not power up. Back to the store it went!!!

For an entry level price this mic can’t be beat. This is great for someone who is starting a podcast and has a limited budget. Actually that is what I bought it for. The sound is good and the price is great.

This is an attractive little microphone but the specs do not mention that it is mono, not stereo, and I did not notice the image of the mono jack in the photo. Monaural recordings play back in the left ear but not the right, breaking symmetry.

I had a lapel mic that required a battery. I didn’t want to have the chance that the extra battery would go dead at the wrong time (law enforcement). This mic works great and is powered from the digital voice recorder so no extra battery to worry about or deal with. Works with my Sony recorder.

1 Star Don’t Buy This Kit if you Have the Canon SD990 IS Camera!
This Canon case may be great for certain Canon models (it’s nicely made)- but the SD990 IS fits so tight there’s no way Canon intended this case to fit that specific model. And shame on Amazon and Canon for advertising that the two items work together.
As for the long metal-with-plastic neckstrap – it looks like something out of vending machine at a bowling alley – you know, the ones with the mechanical arm that searches thru the junk pile to pick out your your 50 cent “prize” and dump it down the chute.
At least the battery was the real deal and works fine. That’s the only reason I’m not returning this kit; not worth the hassle since the battery goes for $41 and this 3-piece Combo Delight was $49.
As for the case and the neckstrap…where did I put that can of lighter fluid?
4 Stars Great value — case is a little tight for SD9990IS
This combo package of spare battery and leather case is a terrific value from Amazon — just price a spare battery and any generic case elsewhere and you’ll appreciate it. Even merchants like BestBuy who sell the combo charge over 50% more. My evaluation:
1. Battery — same as original that came with camera (good – not a 3rd party)
2. Case — its nicely made, real leather, with a magnetic latch. However, its a very tight fit for my Canon SD9990IS. In fact, its so tight that I almost returned it. However, tightness is good for camera protection, and the case seemed to stretch and loosen up a bit after a few uses, so I’ve kept it. Its still takes a little effort to insert and remove the camera, and also latch the flap, but I’ve accepted it. Still I wish it wasn’t quite so snug.
3. Lanyard necklace — it seems to be of reasonable quality, but I don’t use it.

This is not a bad tripod if you just need it for fun. If you are serious about your work, either film, or photography, you need something with a more stable base. Also the part where the camera goes into does not grab the camera well. I would, personally, recommend to buy something a little more expensive but that works well. Good thing: very light, so you can carry it with you anywhere.

Like others have said, this tripod isn’t built like a tank. It isn’t designed for your trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro. It isn’t designed to replace a Steadicam harness. It isn’t designed to be thrown around. Period.
However it *is* designed for you to set up in the back of a room for a school play. It’s designed for you to put on a sidewalk for a parade. This tripod is designed for a casual user who wants their video or pictures to be less shaky. And when you keep that in mind, this tripod is great.
If you’ve ever used a tripod before, there’s nothing at all mysterious about this one. It sets up in under a minute, and the locks keep everything in place. There is a quick release plate, and the quality is… well… about what you should expect to get from a tripod that costs about the same as a decent UV filter. I probably wouldn’t trust it with a heavy pro-grade camcorder, but it’s fine for any current generation consumer camcorder.
The tripod itself is very light and breaks down smaller than just about any tripod I’ve used. As long as your needs are reasonable, this tripod is a great value.

tripod is constructed mostly of plastic and is flexible where you wish it wasn’t, but it is a usable and well designed ultralight accessory. If used cautiously it could last for some time. Not for the professional of course, wouldn’t stand up to the rigors of daily use.

I bought this for my kids to use for the digital cameras and video cameras. I figured it was cheap enough that it wouldn’t matter if the busted it up as kids do with things. It’s stood up their abuse and has worked well for all their needs.

5 Stars Usefull to have accessory
Just got mine in mail today. I have not taken any pictures yet but I already like it 
I’m sure it will perform well on my Canon 50D 28-135mm kit lens. I decided to get the hood right after I got a few pictures with flare (when photographing at night standing next to the light pole).
Also, I like the way camera sits on the table now: the end of the lens is not touching the table and therefore there will be no unnecessary scratch marks on the edge.
I don’t have to remove the hood – the camera+lens+hood fit just fine in the backpack (Canon Deluxe Photo Backpack 200EG) with plenty of room left.
Petal design of the hood makes it easier to put the lens cover in. Hint: put/remove the cover diagonally.
Got mine from Cameta Camera. I received USPS tracking number but could not track the package, which came in less then a week.

This lens hood fits like a glove (and not OJ’s glove, either). It attaches securely, and does a great job of blocking the sun. When not in use, I reverse it and attach it to the lens for storage.

I recommend using hoods on all lenses for 2 reasons. 1. It helps protect the lens barrel if banged against something and then 2. the obvious, helps keep stray sidelight from interferring with your shot. I use mine all the time and it reverses on the lens.
4 Stars A Must Have For Quality Pictures
It is the Canon OEM lens hood for their EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. It fits perfectly and has three main advantages:
1. Cuts down lens flair
2. Improves contrast and image quality – two for one
3. Offers some protection to the front of the lens.
As has been pointed out in other reviews, this is an expensive piece of plastic and given the cost of Canon glass should be included with the lens purchase. But that is not the case. There are other options available. From some of the reviews I have seen of the knock-offs they do not always fit and/or work as well. So for me, given my Canon investment, I just bite the bullet and add the final piece I feel I get better results with. After all, I could buy cheaper glass.
This hood can be reversed on the lens for storage on the lens, but it will require a larger lens case for storage on the lens, if you use that option. And finally, it is a little tight getting the lens cap on/off with the hood in place, but it is doable.

Lens hood does what it’s intended to do, shade the front optic. It will also induce shade into the scene & captured image if using the on-camera flash on any of Canon’s digital slr’s (with the EF 28-135mm) unless you rotate it 90 degrees (a point where it is no longer attached to the lens.) This shadowing is observed from 28mm to about 40mm settings on my Eos 50D. Great while working outdoors and in crowds. Adequately protects the front element but taking the lense caps off is difficult for those with large hands & fingers. A collapsable or sliding hood for this lens would be the better choice if using the on-camera flash with wide angle settings consistantly.

The standard charing system in the camera used corded charging. This tied up the camera in one place while the battery was charging. The plug-in charger in very convenient and you could be charging a spare battery while using the camera. Why didn’t Sony think of including a battery charger such as this one to begin with?

1 Star Don’t waste your money
I purchased this camera yesterday at a local store and I returned it 2 hours later. I could not get the software to download and I could not get the camera to power up. I tried with the batteries that came with the camera… no go. So I put new batteries in the camera and it still would not power up. Back to the store it went!!!

I bought this camera for my home so we could take pictures of my new grand daughter. I’m not a photographer, but this camera takes great pictures. My teenage daughter had the camera all the time. For an entry level price this mic can’t be beat. This is great for someone who is starting a podcast and has a limited budget. Actually that is what I bought it for. The sound is good and the price is great.

This is an attractive little microphone but the specs do not mention that it is mono, not stereo, and I did not notice the image of the mono jack in the photo. Monaural recordings play back in the left ear but not the right, breaking symmetry.

I had a lapel mic that required a battery. I didn’t want to have the chance that the extra battery would go dead at the wrong time (law enforcement). This mic works great and is powered from the digital voice recorder so no extra battery to worry about or deal with. Works with my Sony recorder.

I haven’t used it a whole bunch, but with the microphone clipped to my pocket and the recorder inside (and the micropohone is not a chest level) it appears to work quite well!

1 Star Don’t Buy This Kit if you Have the Canon SD990 IS Camera!
This Canon case may be great for certain Canon models (it’s nicely made)- but the SD990 IS fits so tight there’s no way Canon intended this case to fit that specific model. And shame on Amazon and Canon for advertising that the two items work together.
As for the long metal-with-plastic neckstrap – it looks like something out of vending machine at a bowling alley – you know, the ones with the mechanical arm that searches thru the junk pile to pick out your your 50 cent “prize” and dump it down the chute.
At least the battery was the real deal and works fine. That’s the only reason I’m not returning this kit; not worth the hassle since the battery goes for $41 and this 3-piece Combo Delight was $49.
As for the case and the neckstrap…where did I put that can of lighter fluid?
4 Stars Great value — case is a little tight for SD9990IS
This combo package of spare battery and leather case is a terrific value from Amazon — just price a spare battery and any generic case elsewhere and you’ll appreciate it. Even merchants like BestBuy who sell the combo charge over 50% more. My evaluation:
1. Battery — same as original that came with camera (good – not a 3rd party)
2. Case — its nicely made, real leather, with a magnetic latch. However, its a very tight fit for my Canon SD9990IS. In fact, its so tight that I almost returned it. However, tightness is good for camera protection, and the case seemed to stretch and loosen up a bit after a few uses, so I’ve kept it. Its still takes a little effort to insert and remove the camera, and also latch the flap, but I’ve accepted it. Still I wish it wasn’t quite so snug.
3. Lanyard necklace — it seems to be of reasonable quality, but I don’t use it.

With the ability to angle the flash in almost any direction in relation to the camera solves any difficult lighting situation you might have. 5 Stars I’m very happy with this flash for my Nikon Camera
I found out that to get better pictures in many occasions, it’s necessary to have a flash unit that can be adjusted to give a “bounce” or “fill” type of light. The typical built-in flash of the camera is not adequate for my needs.
I looked a various options but decided on the Nikon SB-600 based of recommendations by various people and reading reviews, etc.
I found a unit at a very good price so the choice became quite easy. The unit is well made, sturdy, fairly light and best of all, it works very well. It is powerful and can illuminate a fairly good distance. The adjustable flash head works just as I had hoped. The unit has a lot of features and “intelligence” that I have not explored yet. I did purchase the optional extension cord so I can hold the flash by hand and illuminate my subject with more flexibility.
I imagine that similar flash units from other manufacturers will do a similarly good job. I don’t know if they are of equivalent quality. OTOH, the prices can be more attractive. All in all I’m happy with my choice and I like the idea that the flash is made specifically to work with my camera by Nikon.

4 Stars Nice Little Recorder
I am a writer and speaker. I find that many of my ideas come not when I am sitting at my computer, but when I am out and about. I needed a way to capture these ideas before they disappeared in my brain. This little recorder does the trick. It’s small and easy to use. Now, I just need to remember to carry it with me.

The Olympus VN5000 is super easy to use, light weight and convenient. I didn’t necessarily need to transfer my recordings to my computer, so this particular model worked out great.

I’m very satisfied with the Olympus VN-5000. I needed a reasonably priced voice recorder to be used on occasion only, but it still needed to be dependable and easy to use, which it is.
I planned on testing it in a Church setting prior to obtaining an add-on external microphone and found it to work quite well with the built-in mic. as is.
I give it 5 stars on its own merit because it performs very well for my intended use in my intended price range and I’m also not comparing its features against other models or higer priced units.
The best advice is that you should review the various options available in voice recorders for your needs. This one isn’t PC compatible and is a mono speaker unit but for me that wasn’t an issue. Ear buds clarify the recordings best although the in-unit speaker does OK on its own.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes, and he purchased one after seeing mine.

The Olympus VN-5000 Digital Voice Recorder is affordable and good to use. I have recorded ten lectures on it, and when I play them back, the quality is clear. The recorder is very sensitive to noise, so you might hear some rustling of your own papers or some people coughing in the background. Other than that, this product is really good and worth your money.

I use this recorder in my entry-level news writing course. It is great for interviews because of its sensitive mic, clear speaker for playback, and handy headphone jack for when you don’t want to disturb others. The instructions are clear, but learning on the player itself is cake (guess what the “rec” button does).
Amazon has a good price, as I unfortunately bought it from Best Buy for $10 more.

The reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because of minor delay in locking all the satellites and lacking WAAS and SIRF features.
3 Stars Nice Features, Problematic reception
I purchased this to use in my car with a laptop. Installation was smooth. I was unable to pick up a satellite signal from inside my home, or from a window sill with large unobstructed views of the sky.
In my car I discovered that the receiver works well when on the roof (it has a built-in magnetic base), however it loses the signal when on the dash by the windshield inside the car. Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 works fine, with the one minor annoyance of having to press a function key (F3)to re-route should you need to change your route while traveling.
A more sensitive receiver and more flexible re-routing would enhance this otherwise nice product.

I am totally annoyed! That sleeve is at least 17 inches long. It is way too big. Other than that – it is beautiful. Perhaps they sent me the wrong one because it sounds like other customers have not experienced that problem.

5 Stars Computer Sleeve
This laptop sleeve is great!! It has enough padding to protect it on the go. I’m currently deployed and we have to walk about a block to the rec center to get Wi-Fi internet, so instead of lugging it around in a huge case or risking carrying it around without anything, this is a great alternative. When the weather is nasty it keeps it from the elements as well as keeping it protected from any bumps. I bought it mainly to slip into my back pack to and from places I travel to and with the side zip option you can just unzip the part at the opening of your backpack for airport security, etc and quickly replace it for easy access. Great product, and the price was very reasonable!

This neoprene sleeve is nice, but the top of it stands about 2 inches higher than the top of my laptop when it’s inside of it. I bought this along with the matching messenger bag, and it’s almost too big to zip inside of the bag.

Smart travel case for 15″ laptop. Great for carry on security on a flight. Zips easily for inspection and gives you that extra cushion to provide protection in the overhead bin. I find it indispensable when making that short trip and you don’t want to bring your whole office in a roll on.

I was scared at first when I bought this because of the reviews it received for the other colors.
I read the review that it takes forever to put on and take off, but it does not take that much time at all.
It fits snuggly on my Macbook, and I love the color of it.
Also, there is no place you can fit the charger. If you are planning to do a lot of traveling with your laptop, I do not recommend this product.
I don’t like having just one layer of case, so I bought another case to put over this one, so it fits my charger and some papers if I need to.

It fit my Dell Inspiron 1525 (size 15.4″) very well. I’ve been shopping around and returning a few laptop sleeves I would buy from stores because they would not fit my laptop. I do not like the laptop sleeves with the zippers because I’m afraid that the teeth would scratch into the body of my laptop when I slip it inside. This one has no zippers and it stretches so no worries about your laptop getting scratched. Color is great as well.
