Sony HTCT100 Sound Bar with Sub Woofer Black

      December 28, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

One of the problems with home-theater surround sound is finding the space to place 6 speakers in a room. It can be a challenge. Sony’s HT-CT100 converts the surround experience to 3.1 channels and uses only 2 speakers, a subwoofer and a SoundBar. The SoundBar is placed like a center channel speaker directly over the TV. Speakers within the bar radiate at different angles to deliver center, left, and right channels through a spatially enhanced soundfield. With 50 Watts to each channel + 100 Watts directly to subwoofer, the system delivers 250 watts total. Featuring HDMI - Component Video - Optical A/V ports, you can connect your TV and DVD or Blu-Ray player directly to the system. It’s the simplest, most streamlined way to enjoy home-theater surround.

LPCM Playback - LPCM is a method of encoding audio information digitally which can have up to 8 channels of uncompressed audio. This wider bandwidth allows for high resolution audio which is closer to the original 3 Optical, 1-Coax Dolby Digital/DTS/ProLogic

      4 Stars Sound Bar
After purchasing this Sony Home Theater CT100 Sound Bar w Sub Woofer, I figured spending a little time working through some of the features. For an upgrade over the traditional speaker 5 set w a small subwoofer big difference. Though the bar itself is smaller, compact, the noise diffusion is the first thing I noticed, unless your sitting in front of the bar itself the sounds are directed at you versus having a whole slough of speakers, wires, and hoping that will be enough.

For an apartment size, this is perfect, just be aware of the bass in the sub woofer, hard to tune the bass, otherwise its a decent set up, less wires, and optical which is very good, I like having less to deal with in the wire department.

      Thanks for reading

      3 Stars NOT ENOUGH SOUND
SYSTEM IS O.K. FOR MONEY NOT ENOUGH SOUND FOR LISTENING TO BLU RAY.HAVE TO LISTEN AT UPPER LEVELS FOR DECENT SOUND.

      4 Stars Nice system
If you want theater sound without the hassle of wiring and surround sound speakers, this is the way to go. It sounds great with digital music television stations as well.

2 Stars Vocal Dialogues TOO LOW
PROS: Looks cool, hdmi slots, great environment sounds, and everything else.

CON: My only MAJOR problem with this unit - I can’t hear people speaking!

I bought “Planet Earth BBC” for blu ray, which has great picture of course and is narrated by David Attenborough. I can hear the monkeys, rivers, wind but can’t hear the narrator. It’s Ridiculous.

I have to turn the Center all the way up to +6 which literally kills the surround sound and the sub to -6 because all the bckgrnd seriously overwhelms the voice of the narrator. After doing this I get acceptable volume on the dialogue of the narrator, however ALOT is to be desired.

I have tried basically every setting on my blu ray and CT100 using HDMI all the way as most people might have suggested. 1 Week in and im about to return it because watching movies on this thing is so difficult.

When Sony said this was a “gamers dream speakers” in their description, they weren’t kidding. My XBOX360 sounds frickin amazing on this thing without having to break 30 on the volume. Ive tried everything to duplicate this sound on my BD S350 blu ray player, even switching it to the port the Xbox (DVD) was using, no luck.

Also, Im sure I set up everything right and this is not an isolated problem. Ive read around and about 10 different other people have the same problem im having, so yeah…

Don’t get this unless your planing on using it for video games only. Maybe I shoulda bought a PS3 for my blu ray? Get the Yamaha Yas-70bl. im sure its a lot better

**EDIT** Tinkered around with my blueray audio settings and it fixed the low dialogue problem. For Sony BDP-s350’s use the following audio settings.

      Set Up - Audio settings:

      AUDIO OUTPUT PRIORITY = COAX/OPTICAL

      AUDIO (HDMI) = AUTO

      BD AUDIO SETTING = DIRECT

      AUDIO ATT = OFF

      DOLBY DIGITAL = DOLBY DIGITAL

      DTS=DTS

      48/KHZ/96KHZ PCM=48KHZ/16BIT

      AUDIO DRC=WIDE RANGE

      DOWNMIX=NORMAL

4 Stars Great sound AND value, honest review
I bought this system about 2 weeks ago from Walmart for $289 and I was expecting it to be like the reviews Ive read on Amazon. Not to say that people should trust ALL reviews left on Amazon, but some of them stand out and I decided to take a risk.

First off, the setup was ridiculously easy. I went from a 5 year old Yamaha 5.1 surround sound system, which STILL sounds great, to this system. Sound bar plugs into the sub/amp in the back, and you plug whatever players and tv’s into the back of the sub as well. By coincidence, my TV is a Sony as well and the stereo remote was able to control my TV as well which makes my life a little easier.

Configuration on the unit is EASY. I will admit, even with the ease of the system I did invest at least 20 minutes into tweaking the sound to get it JUST the way I like it. I used movies, cd music, TV, and a quick video game just to see how it performed and was very pleased. Is it complete 360 surround sound? No. Does it sound amazing for the size, simplicity and price? More than you can imagine.

The surprising thing for me is that my living room isnt completely square! in the back it opens up into a smaller dining room, then there’s the entry to the kitchen, and the front door, and the hall way, etc… so despite all that, I’ve watched 7 movies using this system and I’ve been completely immersed in the action, the characters, and the music with no complaints. It sounds fantastic, I will not return it and if it breaks I’ll buy another.

Rereading some of these reviews, you have to remember a few things. ANY stereo system you get, be it a $300 or a $3000 system, you will have to invest time to configure and fine-tune the system to your liking. No system is going to be perfect right out of the box and that is because of pre-configured settings, room accoustics, placement and measurements (of the room).

Some guy said he hated it because he used to have surround sound and now when he plays video games he dies all the time cause he cant “hear” the enemy behind him… maybe he wasnt all that good! Even then that sounds like a silly reason to give it a bad grade. He should stop blaming his stereo for being a horrible player.

Another person said that it sounded cheap compared to a $1500 dollar system they have. If that’s the case why did they buy another system? When you pay that much for a sound system, you have to understand that you’ve created a new standard for your tastes in audio. It’s nobody’s fault that you honestly thought a $300 Sony system would blow your Bose system away.

Anywho, Im getting off topic. This system is great, you should tweak it until you are satisfied with the sound. Setup time was approximately 3 minutes for me, configuration (sound tweaking) was around 20 minutes. The treble and bass (Highs and lows) are well rounded and can sound very good if you set it up right. I gave this product 4 stars because even though I am extremely satisfied with the product I know it is not the best stereo in the world.
